Best Grilled Cheese
Long live the ultimate comfort food: the toasted cheese sammy. And this tiny shop in a strip mall is a shrine to the good, gooey delights. Offered in seven different types, the “meltdowns,” as they’re called, are as basic as a classic mix of cheddar, Jack and Jarlsberg, or as fancy as a goat cheese and fig preserve bombshell. Flapjacks owners Donna and Mark Allen do the deed the old fashioned way, griddled with lots of butter slathered on nine-grain or ciabatta, so the bread arrives golden and crunchy, its insides oozing hot. Stuffings can be juicy, like the Market Melt of goat cheese, Roma tomato and roasted red pepper doused in a splash of olive oil and balsamic vinegar; or savory, such as oven-roasted, hand carved turkey with baby spinach, brie and cranberry relish. Yum, they can even be eaten as a dessert, like the brie and strawberry with chunky preserves over real fruit.
